Tux - Finkenberg

The Tux - Finkenberg Holiday Region sits in the southernmost area of the Zillertal offering mountains upon mountains. The Tuxertal (Tux Valley) extends from Mayrhofen to the Hintertux glacier. You’re invited to spend a rejuvenating and replenishing summer or winter holiday in this magnificent corner of the Austrian Alps!

The Tux-Finkenberg region presents winter as it was meant to be: a true winter wonderland! Even the beautiful scenery accompanying you on the trip to the area is amazing.

The snow-covered landscape, romantic mountain scenery, warm hospitality and comfort leave nothing to be desired. Finkenberg and Tux offer a snapshot of the perfect holiday: a full day of skiing or snowboarding on the slopes followed by a relaxing evening and ending with a warm, cozy stay at one of the many accommodations tailored for every visitor’s needs and budget.

Tux and Finkenberg offer something for everyone. Skiers can choose the Ski Zillertal 3000 area comprising the lifts of Finkenberger Almbahnen, Rastkogelbahn and Eggalmbahn, or the imposing Hintertux Glacier. The Zillertal cable cars take you up to 3250 meters and offer a guarantee of snow (year-round skiing on the glacier, of course). If you’re looking for variety, Ski Zillertal 3000 boasts 199 kilometers respectively 604 hectares of slopes and 66 lifts while the Hintertux Glacier features 51 kilometers of slopes with 18 lifts. The 12-kilometer "Schwarze Pfanne" (black pan) run starts at 3250 m on the glacier and ends at 1500 m in the valley at Hintertux.

Cross-country skiers get their money’s worth in the Tux-Finkenberg region. Between the towns of Tux Vorderlanersbach and Madseit there are 14 kilometers of classic cross-country ski runs as well as a 14-km ice skating track. For winter hikers, there are 68 kilometers of cleared winter hiking trails. And of course this includes a hearty sledding course. The Bichlalm (Hintertux), Höllensteinhütte (Lanersbach) and Grieralm (Juns) also offer a spoil of choices. In addition, the large natural ice rink in Tux is ideal for ice skating and curling.

The Tux-Finkenberg area also offers diverse activities like the ‘The color of snow’ ski show. This spectacular performance - with creative lighting effects, hot music and a lot of variety - is sponsored by the ski school in Tux and runs on several dates. It is a ‘must see’ for visitors to the region and takes place at the Hinteranger Arena in Tux-Lanersbach.

Après-ski is a daily rite of passage in the Zillertal. Famous personalities clink glasses at the Hohenhaus Tenne Hintertux ski bar, located in Tux right at the base of the glacier. There’s live music almost every day featuring performances by Olaf Henning, Helmut from Mallorca, Antonia from Tirol and Markus Becker. It’s a party atmosphere with lots of catchy songs.

The Kölsche Winterwoche (carnival week Cologne-style) is now a legendary event in the Zillertal. The atmosphere of the world famous Cologne carnival comes to the valley each year at the end of the season, with a program full of events and activities.

Surrounded by the Zillertal Mountains with peaks that are close enough to touch, a visit to the Tux-Finkenberg holiday region is a chance to experience nature at its purest.

From Mayrhofen one of the five tributaries of the Ziller River leads to the Tuxertal (Tux valley). You’ll pass the towns of Finkenberg, Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns and Madseit until you reach Hintertux, the last town in the valley and home to the Hintertux Glacier.

The cable car runs year-round and skiing is available in both winter and summer. Hintertux Glacier is the only year-round ski resort in Austria and whether you like to ski or sightsee, visiting the glacier - 3200 meters above sea level – is something everyone should experience at least once.

Spannagelhöhle (Spannagel cave) on the Hintertux Glacier is Europe's highest cave that is open to the public. Measuring 12.5 kilometers long, Spannagelhöhle is the largest rock cave in the Central Alps, 500 meters of which can be viewed in the entrance area on a guided tour. Visitors can explore and learn about geological features such as stalactites, marble inclusions (enclosed in rock) and glacial wells.

The Natur Eis Palast (natural ice palace) on the Hintertux Glacier provides an insight into eternal ice. The entrance of the Natur Eis Palast is within walking distance from the glacier bus station # 3. The guided tour allows you to explore the glacial crevasse with magical ice stalactites, huge ice crystals and frozen waterfalls.

In summer, the Tux-Finkenberg holiday region promises hours of rest, relaxation and regeneration. The 350 kilometers of sign-posted hiking trails and clear, sparkling mountain lakes offer a peaceful space for self-reflection. The impressive mountains of the region also offer active sports such as canoeing, climbing, mountain biking and paragliding. Take a break and relax in the outdoor thermal pool in Hintertux or the public swimming pool in Finkenberg.

The Finkenberger Almbahnen (cable car) carries you right up to the summit in both winter and summer. From the top station there are hiking trails of all types and levels of difficulty. One hours-long trail leads to the Rastkogel. When you reach the summit you’ll be rewarded with a majestic view of three valleys: the Inntal, Zillertal and Tuxertal. From the Finkenberg lift’s middle station you can take the Moorlehrpfad (Moorland Educational Path), an educational hike at 1800 meters for the whole family through the moors and bog land.

For an exciting combination of fun, sport and nature, the Erlebnisweg Tuxbach (Tux River Adventure Trail) is a hiking trail with several interactive stations. The sights and activities along the Erlebnisweg Tuxbach will bring out the imaginative side of children, encourage physical activity and sharpen their skills. Activities include a curving slide, an elevated Tarzan ropeway, and a stable full of adventure. The kids will love the experience!

A varied children’s program is offered every day and in the event of inclement weather kids can run around and stay active in the indoor Playarena Tux, an indoor play facility.
