The Zillertal offers top-notch accommodations, adventure and relaxation while on holiday combined with the beauty of nature and a large variety of culinary pleasures. Award-winning chefs – whether in hotel kitchens, exclusive ski chalets or in their own restaurants – will delight your taste buds and spoil you with culinary specialties as part of a day on the slopes or a relaxing evening out. In addition to the wide variety of unique menu choices, visitors to the Zillertal will enjoy the finest wines, specialty schnapps and spirits and of course Zillertal beer. Dairies in the Zillertal

The Zillertal Dairy in Mayrhofen is always worth a visit! Under the motto ‘seeing…smelling…enjoying’ you can view the process of transforming raw milk into cream, butter, cheese, and other delicacies. In the village of Fügen there is a dairy with an attached museum. Both dairies offer a highlight at the end of the tour: sampling their exquisite and tasty products.

Distilling schnapps is a time-honoured tradition in the Zillertal. In many schnapps distilleries, each step of production is on display and available for viewing. Schnapps distillers offer personal tours, with customers being treated to a sampling of the wide variety of products. Innovative, award-winning creations such as ‘Zillertal Bergheubrand’ (schnapps made with hay) and classics ‘Meisterwurz’ and ‘Zirbenschnaps’ (pine schnapps) offer a new and unique perspective on the distilling arts.

Local Specialties

The Zillertal is known for its sumptuous specialities; foremost among them is ‘Zillertaler Krapfen’ (grey cheese, potato puree and spices in a deep fried crepe). Others unique to the region include ‘Zerggl’, ‘Groiggn’, ‘Schliachter Nudeln’, 'Zeltn', ‘Melkermus’, ‘Ofenleber’ and ‘Graukas’ (a gray cheese only produced in the valley). Worth mentioning also is ‘Zillertaler Heumilch’; producers must follow strict criteria regarding quality and taste. Further on: high-quality bacon and honey.

Exceptional Dining

Diners who look for something special have tough choices to make because some of Austria’s best chefs are from the Zillertal. Famous television chef Alexander Fankhauser, proprietor of Restaurant Alexander in Hochfügen, and chef Sieghard Eder of Restaurant Sieghard have earned prestigious ‘bonnets’ (awards) from the Gault Millau, one of the most influential French restaurant guides. Other great locations include the Adlerblick (Eagle's View) in the Zillergrund, Soulkitchen in Ramsau and Landgasthof Linde in the village of Stumm. You’ll find more venues in our link tips.

Zillertal Beer

Zillertal Bier

Founded in 1500, Zillertal Bier is the oldest private brewery in Tyrol. In virtually every local restaurant and pub you can order an authentic ‘Zillertal beer’. Varieties include pilsner, märzen, wheat beer, radler (beer mixed with Sprite), stout and the famous Gauder Bock. There is a unique and refreshing beer for every beer drinker’s taste. In 2013 you’ll be able to tour the new brewery hall in Zell am Ziller. In addition, Zillertal Bier is an organizer of Gauderfest, Austria’s largest traditional festival. Cheers!

When visiting the Zillertal, perhaps it’s best to suspend that diet you’ve been trying! The choices for fine dining are limitless. Enjoy the culture and tradition of the Zillertal by making local culinary specialties part of your holiday experience. Zilllertal cuisine is known far beyond its borders and with the assistance of a Zillertal cookbook, you can take home a little piece of the valley long after your holiday has ended.
