Activity and Nature

Whether you approach the Zillertal (Ziller Valley) from the North, East or West, the Brettfall-Chapel above Strass greets you from every direction. The chapel stands prominently on a rock – like a lighthouse guiding ships – marking the Zillertal’s entrance. Driving through the valley, you sense a connection with pure nature that has made the Zillertal so famous.

The Zillertal’s impressive mountains on both sides of the river are one reason visitors return year after year. Summer and winter offer opportunities to experience nature up close. Sporting activities that attract both guests and locals to the mountains include walking, hiking, biking, golf, skiing and snowboarding, as well as cross-country skiing and sledding. For those who enjoy being in motion and enjoying nature, what could be better?

Are you someone who loves nature and enjoys outdoor activities? Here’s a glimpse of just some of the activities in the Zillertal:

A summer classic! More than 1000 kilometers of perfectly maintained hiking trails await you in the Zillertal. A steady pace combined with pure mountain air and gorgeous mountain panoramas are perfect for both body and soul.

Mountain Climbing & Rock Climbing

Those who prefer Alpine-based activities may try to navigate one of the 50 “Dreitausendern” (peaks over 3000 metres in elevation) in the Zillertal or hike on one of the formidable Alpine paths (Höhenwanderweg). World-famous climbing resorts like the “Ewige Jagdgründe” (eternal hunting grounds) have attracted the best climbers for decades. Climbing tracks are a recent trend and there are seven in the Zillertal alone.

Biking and Mountain Biking

The Zillertal Bike Trail stretches 30 kilometers through the valley floor. Countless mountain biking routes are also available on mountain slopes. E-Bikes are an easy and convenient way to get around – you can rent one at almost any sports shop. For adrenalin junkies, the Zillertal also offers single trails.

Skiing and Snowboarding

The Zillertal is a paradise for skiers and is known worldwide for its winter Alpine activities, which include four large ski resorts (with lifts connecting ski areas) and three smaller family resorts. There are also multiple award-winning snowboard parks located in Mayrhofen and Hintertux.

Winter Hiking & Cross-Country Skiing

With or without snowshoes, winter hiking offers something for everyone. Whether following existing tracks or forging new ones, the many winter hiking trails in the Zillertal are ideal. For those interested in endurance sports, Zillertal’s cross-country courses are great for your heart, circulation, muscles and overall fitness.

There are not many sports that better combine moderate exercise with fresh air and scenic beauty than golf. A new 18-hole course awaits you in Zillertal beginning in spring 2014.

There are always exciting and healthy activities to take up in the Zillertal regardless of the season. It is no coincidence that the Zillertal is called the ‘most active valley in the world’. Amateurs and professionals get full value for their budget year-round. If you are looking for like-minded people to discover the mountains, streams and valley paths, you’ll always find them right here in the Zillertal. Our professional tourism offices have up-to-date information, offers, guided tour information and will work with you to optimize your experience and enjoyment of all that the region has to offer.
